Meet David & Linda
David A. Stein
David Stein was a devoted philanthropist and a beloved cornerstone of the Jacksonville community. Alongside his wife, Linda Stein, David embodied a spirit of generosity and commitment that profoundly impacted countless lives. Their philanthropic efforts have bolstered numerous local nonprofits, including the Jewish Community Alliance, which David co-founded; River Garden Senior Services, established by his grandmother; and the Mayo Clinic, where he spent his final days. Other beneficiaries of their generosity include the United Way of Northeast Florida, Jacksonville University, the University of North Florida, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Humane Society, the Quality Education for All Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, the North Florida School for Special Education, Leadership Jacksonville, Cathedral Arts Project, and the Jacksonville Symphony.
David and Linda's dedication to education and community service shines through their pioneering Stein Scholars program, which they initiated over two decades ago at Jacksonville University and UNF. For more than 25 years, the Steins have mentored and supported students, fostering a deep passion for community engagement and service. Under the affectionate guidance of "Mama and Papa Stein," the "Steiners" have built HabiJax houses, volunteered at the Jacksonville Humane Society, and engaged in a variety of community-focused projects.
A few years later, David and Linda launched the Stein Fellowship, a transformative program designed to equip young professionals with the essential skills for philanthropic leadership. This initiative is rooted in their unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders dedicated to community betterment, enabling participants to experience profound personal and professional growth.
David's legacy of giving and mentorship has inspired a generation of leaders, scholars, and community advocates. He will be remembered as a unique and irreplaceable community leader whose impact on Northeast Florida is immeasurable. As his tombstone fittingly declares, David left his mark on the world, and indeed, “he made a difference.”
